The English Teaching Department
The English Teaching Department originated from the English Department established in 1997 and was renamed in June 2005. It is primarily responsible for teaching foundational English courses for first- and second-year students, as well as core English courses for third- and fourth-year students.
During the foundational learning phase in the first and second years, the Department offers courses in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and other introductory courses, including national-level quality courses such as Intermediate Communicative English and Advanced Communicative English. The courses are student-centered, encouraging students to strengthen their fundamental language skills and broaden their knowledge through diverse communicative activities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.
At the same time, the Department has introduced the “Understanding Contemporary China" series of textbooks and has organized and innovated the construction of ideological and political education in foreign language courses at universities. This integrates ideological and political elements into existing courses, updates educational concepts, and combines them with language skill courses. The goal is to enhance students' ability to tell China's story in English and to cultivate a new generation of English-speaking professionals who can articulate China's characteristics, spirit, and wisdom to the world.

In the third and fourth years of specialized study, the English Teaching Department is responsible for teaching comprehensive skills courses in English within the "English + Specialized Direction" model. These courses include Appreciation of English Works, Selected Readings in Modern English Prose, English Journalistic Readings, and Academic Writing. The focus is on enhancing students' professional competencies while improving their critical thinking, practical research skills, and cross-cultural awareness, aiming to cultivate diverse English professionals with an international perspective and strong intercultural communication skills.
The English Teaching Department also organizes students to actively participate in various exams and competitions, including the Test for English Major Grade 4 and 8, the “FLTRP-ETIC CUP” English Contest, and the "Understanding Contemporary China" National College Students' Foreign Language Competence Competition. Under the guidance of professional teachers, students have achieved excellent results in several national competitions.
The English Teaching Department always prioritizes teaching quality. It continuously promotes teaching reforms across tiered instruction, online teaching, and teaching evaluation, significantly improving students' comprehensive English language skills. Additionally, it effectively integrates teaching resources, with all full-time faculty actively participating in the instruction of foundational and core courses in the English Teaching Department. The Department has achieved remarkable results in teaching and research, boasting one national-level teaching team and several provincial-level ones, and has received over ten national and provincial teaching achievement awards.
